what needs of the individual and community are met by education?

Let's put it this way: Would you want to go into surgery with a doctor who had never taken a single medical class? Would you trust your meds in the hands of a pharmacist who couldn't read? Would you trust your car to a mechanic who had never seen a car before?

Education makes all things possible, because it is through education that we learn to fill our roles in society. The doctor, the lawyer, the soldier, the mechanic, the novelist, and even the janitor had to learn their job somehow--therefore getting an "education" to some degree.

Therefore, I would say that every need of the individual and community is met by education. We are able to eat because we have "educated" ourselves on what we should and shouldn't put in our mouths, and where to find it. We know not to touch a hot stove because we "learned" that it was hot. We know not to lay across train tracks because we were "taught" that it was dangerous.

Get my point?

Well, with the basic education that one gets from attending elementary-high school it helps to expand the world of a person. This expansion helps the person figure out what he/she wants to do in life. Which, in turn, helps society. As long as what they choose is actually something helpful, like becoming a scientist, doctor, police officer or even a janitor. (Not everyone can have glorious jobs.)
Though, if your writing a paper about education and its benefits you might want to mention how education is beginning to lag in America. Perhaps, your essay could stress the importance by showing other countries' successes and how a good educational system is linked to that. Then show how ours isn't doing that. Ex.Leading to companies outsourcing jobs to foreigners with better educations than our own people. Meaning loss of opportunities all because the company doesn't want to pay to teach its new employees what they should already know.
