Marketing is an activity focusing on the consumers. Sales is a process focusing on the organisation. Marketing is a department where sales is a process. Marketing finds a customer for sales department to make a sale. Marketing is involved in market survey, research, product launching, advertisement, forecasting scheduling and development. Sales shall provide the product to the customer for a predtermined price with relevent documantation and collect the cheque /cash. Sales shall bring the revenue to the organisation and marketing shall bring customers and satisfy the needs of the customers.

Marketing is an Art and it involve a process called selling. In simple way it can be explained as, selling means first you have a product to sell and you search around people to BUY, where as in the case marketing, you have assessed the need and demand of people and try to make a product best fits to the need of people and sell.

Depends who you ask. Most people consider marketing to just be advertising or selling. However, the business description of marketing involves everything from product conception to delivery (learned that in MBA classes). True marketing involves figuring out what the customer wants first... then selling and finally delivering it.

Contrary to popular belief this usage is not lazy or indecent nor is it as recent as many of you seem to think. At least as far back as the time of the American Revolution pls or plz was used in place of please in correspondence , again after the introduction of the telegraph, and most recently with the advent of text messaging, and all for the same reason, cost. During the early days of our country both paper and ink were expensive, so there were accepted methods of abbreviation to cram as much information into a letter as possible pls (or plz) was one example of this. When sending telegrams you were charged by the word (as in typing every 5 characters not actual words) so once again pls was used (among many other shortcuts u for you and so on) to make the sending of a message as cost effective as possible. As for text messaging, when first introduced, you may recall, we were charged per message we sent, so cutting letters out of messages meant a single text could be sent instead of two. It became a habit that carried over onto the internet, even though the need for the abbreviation no long exists,,,,to be fair though I am fairly sure you type OK or okay instead of Orl Korrekt which is the widely accepted original phrase the abbreviation came from, so can you really cast stones?

Marketing and selling are two completely different animals. Marketers deal with the public awareness of your product (ie advertising, press releases, web ads, websites, campaigns, public image). Sales handles the "converts" from marketing. Converts are people who go from seeing your product to taking an action to buying it. It is then up to the sales department to make the converts into customers/clients.

In a way-- marketing means presenting a product to the targeted group and enticing them into buying the product by advertising it/presenting it as the product that is right for them.
Example: a pharmaceutical company will market or present a new drug to physicians in hopes the doctor(s) will buy and prescribe the product to their patients.

Marketing and Selling are NOT THE SAME THING.
Marketing involves:
Advertising -i.e. frequency and reach - getting the word out there, and getting your message heard.
Marketing involves a LOT of research - determining your target market, where to reach your target market, determining if your product FITS your target market, the demographics of your target market, etc.
SELLING involves TAKING the information that MARKETING has gathered for you and going out and reaching that target market. Marketing brings in the leads and qualifies them - sales goes out and touches those leads and tried to finish the sale.

TV is non stop marketing / commercials / ads and selling !
AND marketing professional services IS selling also because people pay $$$$ for legal, dental, medical services.
Whether the product is tangible or a service is irrelevant . . . it is marketed to get $$$ AND that is selling !
