I would like to research the number of items a retailer has sold of a product, like a particular toy or car seat, etc. at a retailer like walmart, home depot or mazon.com. Can this be obtained somewhere?

any company's annual accounts are public record. you could try sending a polite letter or email, directed to their accounts or press office

They obviously would never give that information away, trust me I have tried many times. The only people who know that information are usually the accountants and the purchasing agents of the company. Being in the retail and wholesale business for many years, I can tell you this. The markup on electronics is usually 25 - 30%, clothing is 50 - 60%, jewelry is 80 - 300%, and home furnishings is 80 - 150%. Now as for amazon, eBay, and e-commerce in general, their mark up is much less then a standard retail store, the reason being is that they don't have much overhead. For example, if you saw a T.V at Best-Buy or Circuit City for $2000 dollars, if you search for it on amazon, eBay, and e-commerce sites, you will find the same exact brand new T.V for around $1700 or less.

That information is confidential and if you somehow could obtain that information form Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Amazon then you could sell it for thousands of dollars to their competition.
