My advice would be to get an inexpensive, used acoustic guitar. Music stores, second hand stores, garage sales, etc. would be a good source. You can probably find a decent used guitar for under $50. I would not suggest a beginner spend any more than that until they find out if playing is something they take to and will continue. Closets & attics all over the country are filled with guitars people bought but never learned to play.

I'd go with a classical or acustic (I know I spelled that wrong) guitar, guitar center's the best place to buy one. Don't get anything expensive, but don't go get a cheapo guitar either. Good companies are Taylor, Ibanez, Fender (not Squier by Fender), Cordoba, and Yamaha. Good luck! You may also want to ask someone at the store you buy one from about this too.

start off by buying a cheap one. No good buying a really expensive new one unless you're certain you love playing guitar and are serious about it.

You can rent one or buy a cheap even second-hand one. If u want to buy a new one, i think this one is OK for a beginner. http://www.opentip.com/products/Appassionato_Elegant_Student_Violin_Outfit-569051.html
