Absolutely not! Anyone with some common sense would ride with a helmet. Horses are unpredictable and even though your horse might be tame or your not jumping, anything can happen. You might be walking around the ring and your horse could spook or you could be trotting or cantering & your horse could trip. It only takes one time and you could be paralyzed and living the rest of your life in a wheelchair.

Yes I never wear a helmet but i should. I would wear a helmet if i jumped and anything like that. I just ride trails. I ride for such long periods of time that a helmet gets annoying. oh and if riding a horse that is not broke good or is spooky i would defiantly wear a helmet.

I have occasionally ridden without a helmet, but only my mare who I trust and is essentially bombproof and trusts me enough not to spook and run/buck etc. If I ride any other horse, no matter how calm the owner said they are, I wear a helmet. When I was learning to ride, I cracked 4 helmets before I learned to fall on my side instead of my head. Or because the horses bucked me off , etc. Those helmets saved my life.
My mom works in an Intesive Care Unit at a local big hospital- she has seen brains mushed out from accidents on horses and motorcycles from people not wearing a helmet- basically their skull exploded on impact. A helmet helps cushion the impact, if no helmet, you are basically taking a sledge hammer full force to your head.

You leave many questions unanswered. How old are you? If you are still in your parents' home, it is up to them if you ride with or without a helmet. Where do you ride? Always follow the barn rules. What discipline? If you jump, you should absolutely wear a helmet regardless of your age. What is your skill level? Beginner - wear it. What is the training level of the horse? Green and spooky - I'd wear it. And remember, NO horse is truly bomb-proof.

I have rode a horse without a helmet before, but this was a very tamed, and not racing horse. If you are going to get on a horse that goes fast, or that is wild you really should wear a helmet! It would help you feel safer, and more confident for the next time you rode!!
-hope I could help!

I have a couple times, but it was an older and slower horse. Still, you never know what could happen. It doesn't make a difference whether you're jumping or riding western...accidents can happen no matter what you're doing or what horse you're riding.
I have been knocked unconscious WITH my helmet on, so just imagine what would have happened if I wasn't wearing a helmet. I probably wouldn't be here today. The impact was so strong I still don't remember what happened.
I don't care how hardcore you think you are, no one's skull is "tough as nails."

The only time I rode with a helmet was when I showed in English, and it was required (and the dratted thing was covered in black velvet, and every English show had to fall on a day that was at least 90 degrees...not cool!). Other than that, I never have. And yes, I've had my fair share of accidents, including getting a concussion by hitting a rock and one fall bad enough that I required shoulder surgery. However, I do advise that beginner riders should wear helmets for at least the first 6 months of training.

I can and I have, but I don't any longer. Even when I visit my friends in Texas and ride western, I go out with my helmet on. And each time that helmet saves my skull from a good knock, I'm thankful that I did. I've seen too many serious accidents.

Grampa and I always ride without a helmet. We're with the horses everyday. The grandkids must wear helmets! That's the rule.
