What are the dolls called, that have a stick protruding from their back? The arms and legs are typically jointed. The have a dowel in their back, to hold, and when you twist it, they look like they are walking. Anyone know what they are called?

I believe you are thinking of the wooden figures that Me2 gave a link to.

But they're not generally "twisted" to make the motion... the walking or dancing motion comes from pressing on the flat board rather than moving the figure. Generally, you sit on one end of the board, and dangle the figure ajust above it... when you quickly (and contiuously) press down on the board, it becomes a spring which keeps hitting the bottom of the feet under the figure (since the legs are jointed, they then do "dancing" motions or walking ones depending on how high and hard the board hits them). They are one of many "folk toys" still made in places like Appalachia, etc. Great fun.

I'm not really sure what you are looking for. Hope this helps. I typed in jointedwoodenpuppets into the search. Pretty interesting things.
