Personally, I think the NHL should scrap the rule that lets the loser of a game that goes to OT or a shootout get 1 point. Each game should be worth 2 points and only 2 points.

i like the OT and shootouts very fun to watch, but you shouldn't get rewarded with a point for losing. The wining team should get 2 points and losing team should get none. Hell the LOST.

Personally, I hate it. I don't like the shootout to begin with because it's not hockey and doesn't really say who should win the game. Why can't they just keep playing until someone scores. Sure, there would be the odd 3rd overtime game but who cares, the players are getting millions afterall. If they stay with the shootout, they must change the rules for points. For instance, last night Calgary beat Minnesota in a shootout and they are 7th and 8th in the west. However, with this Minnesota got the one point and Calgary got two. Edmonton is in tenth and it hurts them more than if Calgary would have won in regulation. No, I'm not an Oiler fan but this isn't really fair. I think you get 2 for a win and 0 for a loss and get rid of the shootout. Keep playing until someone scores or bring back the tie where each team gets one point. Games should not be worth more points than other games just because they went to OT.

If your idea were adopted, you could just give a winning team 1 point, or just keep a won-loss record. I would be able to swallow the present system better if a regulation winner got 3 points, that way you are giving away the same number of points for ANY game.

By the way, I keep hearing the same argument over and over that makes no sense to me: somebody works hard to get in overtime, why should they get nothing out of it? Well, consider this:

1. The object of the game is to score MORE goals than your opponent. Period.

2. NO OTHER SPORT does this. Baseball teams who lose in extra inning do not have a problem with this. You lose, you lose. Suck it up.

3. THE PRESENT SYSTEM is rewarding a team who gets to overtime BEYOND what a team who doesn't gets. That is what is not fair.

4. If I still haven't convinced anyone that the argument is nonsensical, why stop at overtime? Why not split 3 points for a first period tie, 5 for a second period tie, 7 for a third period tie, 9 for an overtime tie, and 11 for a shootout? After all if you're Philadelphia and you're tied with Buffalo after a period, you worked hard for that, right?

I think that either they scrap the rule or move to a 3 point system where the Winner in Reg gets 3 winner in OT/SO get 2 and the loser in that game get 1. i think this will better establish good teams cause teams that just win in SO's are not a better team in my opinion. But Will it take a team with 9 SO losses make the playoffs when a team 2 points behind with 4 SO losses does not?

I agree. I think that it is an absoulte disgrace to award a team for losing. A loss is a loss no matter when it occurs, whether it was in OT or a shootout it should not matter. I like having shootouts in the regular season, I just don't think that a team should be awarded a point for losing. Congratulations, you are a bunch of losers who just so happen to do so in OT? Anaheim is on top of their division thanks to 10 OT/SO losses. This rule should be looked at and examined more by the league officials instead of some stupid rule for awarding a team that wins in regulation 3 points, which is even more ridiculous than this current one.

It was a mistake to do away with tie games. Regular season games should be worth two points. If one team leads after three periods, they should get two points. If the teams are tied, they should get one point each and call it a night. Overtime should be reserved for playoff games.

I am not so adamant in my dislike of regular season overtime as I am with shootouts.

I intensely despise shootouts. It is bush league, amateurish, and a bunch of other bad things.

Shootouts are like ending a baseball game with a home run derby, or a basketball game by having a free throw contest, or a football game with a field goal contest. They are just wrong.

Personally I'm for scrapping the whole Shootout thing and going to the OLD style. 2 points for a win 0 for a loss and 1 for a tie. I don't think oh it is more exciting because some one offically WON.

I like the idea of the overtime and shootouts. Shootouts add excitement to a deadlocked game. I don't like the point distribution though. I don't think you should gain 1 point(for losing), just because you made it to the extra session. I think the newly "reinvented" NHL is doing this to bridge the gap between mediocre teams, and good teams. This way KINGS fans still attend games in April. Bottom line, it's March, and every team still has a mathematical chance of making the playoffs(including my NYR)..... AND it is much better than the "old" NHL circa 1980......21 teams......18 playoff spots.........What the (explicative deleted!)!!!!????

How can anyone want to get rid of shootouts?

if you've ever been to a game when one happens you'll notice that everyone in the building is on their feet watching whether they are a new fan, casual fan or a die-hard....

one bounce can decide who wins??????? that describes every game ever played shootout or non shootout.

2 points for a win...regulation, OT or shootout....
0 points for a loss

oh and shootout goals should count on player stats.

I like watching the shootouts, but I think you should only get points for the following:

Victory (regulation time): 2 points
Victory (overtime): 2 points
Victory (shootout): 1 point

No points for an overtime or shootout loss.
