Let's get this Somerset/Avon thing sorted out.

Historically Bath was in Somerset (but it's its own post town, postcode BA, not Taunton as someone said).

In around 1971 the counties of England were altered in some cases to bring them up to date with modern population patterns and Avon was created from parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire (the status of Bristol was even more complicated) and Bath was in Avon.

For political expediency the Tories under Mrs Thatcher abolished any logical system of counties completely. Most of the new counties were abolished as they had Labour councils, and bits of some counties were taken away and called "unitary authorities" with no governance from the main county, while others remained attached. Britain is the only country in the world without a logical tiered system of local government.

In this way Avon was abolished but its components, including Bath, were not restored to Somerset and Gloucestershire but became unitary authorities.

So, in short, Bath is not in any county as far as local government is concerned. It is still part of Somerset purely by tradition, but Somerset County Council has no jurisdiction there.

By the same token, as you travel north on the M5 from Bristol, first you see a sign saying "Welcome to South Gloucestershire" and 15 miles or so north you pass a sign saying "Welcome to Gloucestershire".

Madness!

It used to be in a county called Avon, but the population revolted and kept putting Somerset, which is where it originally was. In the past few years it was put back into Somerset. Where it belongs now.

By the way who put UK. I know we are small but a county??!!!!
