what is the penalty or penalties of opening someone else's mail? Such as fines, jail,

It's a federal offense, and you could be sentenced both prison time and fines. I would imagine the maximum jail penalty would be 20 years....don't know about the fine though.......I would say it would be into the thousands of dollars.

Mail fraud penalties depend on the severity of the case, how long it has been happening, number of incidents, etc.

the easiest way for me to answer you is to tell you to go to the court house and ask....i think that the fines and jail time and all vary by state and location....
