There will be 2 young couples travelling at the end of August and we want to rent a condo or a beach house. Keep in mind, this is on a budget.

Hi...I would try Myrtle Beach SC. I am looking at Eliotts Realty (they send me their book) and the Waipani (the condo where I want to stay) is 480 a week in the low season which is the 18th thru 25th of Aug and even lower the next week. That is a two bedroom condo of at least oceanview but on the ocean.

Myrtle is very affordable and has great dining, shopping, golf and of course the beach!!!

I usually book at a resort and did so for this year but next year this is for sure what I am doing. I go every year in the spring for a week.

Bar Harbor, Maine is just beautiful at that time of year. Lots of fun things to do, if you're adventurous and interested in the New England lifestyle. Lobster and steamer bakes, clam digging, hiking, deep sea fishing, cove exploring, south of Bar Harbor is the Kancamagus highway, which is absolutely beautiful. You could even pitch a tent up there and stay a few nights on the river for free! Rent a kayak and hit the Kanc, or rent in Bar Harbor and explore the ocean. Be sure to catch a Whale Watch too, it's worth ever penny!!
If you travel to southern Maine, you can explore Portland, and the Old Port, both have great beach shops. Check out Old Orchard Beach for a really fun day at the ocean! Northern New Hampshire has a town called North Conway, full of lots of great resorts, and outlet shopping (almost any store you can think of and NO sales tax!! Yippie!!!). You can get a room for around $40 at a nice Bed & Breakfast, since August is when the season is beginning to come to a close.

Try Oak Island, NC. There area couple beaches here - not a LOT of action, but one of the most serene beaches I've been on. Clean, not too crowded, and of course - inexpensive!!

The Jersey Shore. heat and sunny, great waves, boardwalk relaxing, playing at Atlantic city, boogie boarding, surfing, in simple terms undeniable swimming, sunbathing, and you're close adequate to NYC for an afternoon out.
