The question being what is the meaning of the word 'eklavya' most people have answered it as a film by vinod chopra or the name of the character in the mahabharat.. But those are the contexts in which the name is used, not the meaning of the name
itself which i think refers to 'one phase of the moon'.. if i am not mistaken

Eklavya is one character from the epic Mahabharata. You can read more about him http://www.geocities.com/mahaabhaarat/kathaa/2childhood/11eklavya.htm . Recently Vidhu Vinod Chopra has made a movie named as Eklavya but I dont think it has any relation with that character. You can know more about movie at http://www.eklavya-thefilm.com/

Ekalavya means a man of word who keeps a promise, a character in Mahabharata, was outstanding in his pursuit of knowledge. He worshipped an idol of his 'Guru' – Dronacharya and mastered the art of archery through self-perseverance, without the aid of his 'Guru'. On knowing about Ekalavya, Dronacharya desired the thumb of Ekalavya's right hand as a fee, to cripple him so that he would never be able to excel his students. Ekalavya smilingly sacrificed it. A boy who had grown up in the forest thus developed into a great personality - a fine example for others to emulate.

In the Mahabharata epic, Ekalavya (Sanskrit: एकलव्य, ékalavya) is a young prince of the Nishadha tribes, and a member of a low caste, who nevertheless aspires to study archery in the gurukul of Dronacharya. Despite being rejected by the great teacher Drona, Ekalavya embarks upon a program of self-study in the presence of a clay image of Drona, and achieves a level of skill equal to that of Arjuna, Drona's favorite and most accomplished pupil. Fearful that Ekalavya will excel him, Arjuna begs Drona to take action. Drona goes to Ekalavya and demands that Ekalavya turn over his right thumb as a teacher's fee. The loyal Ekalavya cripples himself and thereby ruins his prospects as an archer by severing his thumb and giving it to Drona.

Ekalavya is not a word - its name of a person in epic Mahabharatha.
Those days 'sudras' were restrained from learning 'kshatriya vidyas' one of which is archery. Dronacharya the great guru of Pandavas refuse to take Ekalavya as his disciple and to teach him archery.
But, this Ekalavya, with undepreciated esteem and regard towards Dronacharya retain him as his master in his mind and practice to become such a great archer who had the potential to outbeat 'Arjuna', the favourite disciple of Dronacharya.
The story of Ekalavya ends with his falling prey to cunning plot of Dronacharya - who once refused to be his guru and never taught Ekalavya anything - The guru, having realised that he is set in Ekalavya's mind as guru, goes and asks for the thumb of Ekalavya as gurudakshina only to cripple and disable him for ever.
Though Ekalavya grasp the intention of Dronacharya, he stands for loyalty and truth and happily gives away his thumb to this person and thus this Ekalavya is let aside from competing with Arjuna and from taking side of enemies of Pandavas, the Kauravas.
So Ekalavya is the one who took pride in offering his thumb as Gurudakshina, and crippled himself and sacrificed his life ambition of being a archer, for the sake of the Guru who never taught him. He knowingly submit to the Gurus unethical demand out of reverence and loyalty.
Todays film 'Eklavya', i dont know its relevance to this epic character becasue, i didnt see the movie.
