it tries to open, xp shows up for a few seconds then goes blank

Do a system restore to a point before you downloaded the updated virus program.

All the above answers assume you can open XP
and do things !
1.Start the computer Press F8.
Select Safe mode.
and if successful proceed with further. choices to check your XP is. normal.
AVG has nothing to do with your problem.
If you can select
start/run/msconfig
Remove checkmark against AVG.
from start programs.
open it after Xp is working normally.

your talking about avg 7.5 free version arnt you?
i downloaded it but it only slows xp for me try the avg forums if you do a yahoo scearch for avg you will find the homepage and a link to the forums
or try www.grisoft.com they made avg and the free version i also installed avg anti spywere and works fine with windows but it will not find as meny spywhere as ad aware

yes be more specific, and avg probably did not couse it.
u must have changed some setings or something.
