The music industry seems to be in a slump and has been for a while. Pretty much anyone can be popular these days. Boring music videos, 30 different bands that all sound the same, the lyrical content is getting even more ridiculous (in all genres). There's such a lack of creativity now. This is just my opinion, but what are yours? What do you think is wrong with the music scene and how do you think it can be fixed?

Its all about what is marketable instead of what is really good (Disney Channel in particular comes to mind). There's such a low standard for musicians now.

umm well i agree in some way.
there are still musical artist out there that are creavity and have good lyrics. For instance the Fray. wow have you heard their cd. how to save a life is such a well written song. its about an arguement of this couple and at the end she leaves and i quess something happens to her and ends up dying and thats y he says and i would of stayed up all night if i knew how to save a life. oh and my chemical romance is good and creative i mean theyre new cd is like a freakin movie. its about a cancer patient and his journey. it starts of with the song the end and it sounds like an introduction to a play. oh the song welcome to the black parade pretty much explains the concept of the album. the last song famous last words sort of gives the patient hope that he can make it through it. THESE ARE MUSICAL ARTIST!!
but yeah then there is other songs that have no meaning andd lack creativity for instance: mims- im hot. what the heck hes rapping on why hes hot.
or fall out boy- none of theyre songs make sense to me its like if they just write anything.
but i got to admit even though most of them lyrically suck they have good beats which is y most people listen to them.

I agree. Music has definitely changed, for the worst in my opinion.
Music is more vulgar. The song by Khia, called "My Neck, My Back" or something was absolutely disgusting. And I am not even a conservative! There are a lot of poser bands out there that sound very similar (I am thinking punk). There are a lot of wannabe pop stars (ex. Brooke Hogan, Katharine McPhee) and a lot of stars that shouldn't be (ex. Taylor Hicks, Lindsay Lohan). If you are pretty and you can sing in the least bit, you get a record deal. Look at Ashley Tisedale (a Disney Channel 'star.') She has mediocre dancing skills and mediocre singing ability, yet she has a record out. Lindsay Lohan thought that just because she is a famous actress, she could sing...WRONG.
I think one of the biggest differences is that back in the day, if a person was a singer and an actor, they WERE singers and actors. Frank Sinatra was a great actor and a great singer...Rosemary Clooney, Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe... They were multi-talented. People nowadays THINK they are multi-talented, but they are not.
The quality of music has definitely suffered over the years, you are right...
As for fixing it, I really don't think we can anymore. Unfortunately, our society seems to like mediocre artists, as they have high record sales and such... It's pretty sad...
What's even more sad is that the RIAA is suing people of all ages for trying to share music with others. They've got to get their grubby paws on as much money as they can, even if that means suing children, elderly, and colleges students that are $50,000 in debt already. Why can't we buy CDs? Because we can't afford them! Americans are so busy paying bills, car insurance, health insurance, student loan payments...who has money for CDs!?

I have to agree. A few years ago I researched music in general going all the way back to about 1938. Compiled a list of almost 3,000 songs that had "charted" during the period and found that music "styles" go in roughly 3 1/2 year cycles. If you take the year 2007 and go back in approximately 7 year intervals, you will probably find similar absolutely BLAH periods. We had one during the 80s with artists like Peabo Bryson where every song had that insipid bell-tone synth piano sound. What to do about it? Give the cycle time to recycle. For example, bet you didn't realize it but I've noticed a lot more influence from the late 60's in the last couple of years. Pretty scary. Those that never got into the music of 1965 are probably listening to it's influence right now, and that was kind of a boring musical period...flower power, etc. If you don't believe me, listen to the Shins. They are like Jefferson Airplane/Starship, The Byrds and Fleetwood Mac all rolled into one!

The problem is simple. .. RAP!!!! The rap genra, music (and I use that term loosely) and Rap artists (I use that term loosely as well) have poisoned not only the music industry but our society as well. For the most part the ENTIRE rap culture is nothing but a bunch of ghetto scumbucket criminal thugs!! Look at their poster children 50 cent and Eminem!! Drug dealing wife beating hoochie mamma screwing pieces of garbage for human beings. Sadly. . . .the music industry. . . . thug professional athletes. . . and drug dealers all funnel money to each other and in reality are all one in the same!!! There is NO talent in Rap and very little even at best!! That is why all the REAL musicians and song writers are coming back to tour. The decent, non criminal, not ghetto scumbucket people have had enough. Bob Seger, the police, supposedly Van Halen and others are all coming back to perform live shows. Who could stomach watching some lame rapper like 50 cent do his same old same old for 2 or 3 hours?? Evey song is the same!! I saw Bob Seger the other night and it was AWESOME!!! ROCK AND ROLL BABY. There were guitars, drums, horns, and REAL songs with REAL lyrics about more than just Drugs, Rape, Killing, and looser ghetto cars with spinning hubcaps. No tattoo covered freaks on stage. . . . No half naked hoochie mamma whores on stage. . . no do rag wearing no talent rap losers on stage. . . just a lot of talented people makeing great music! No fireworks. . . . no special effects. . . .just real music!

I agree with you. It seems that everything has become so generic. I think its that most music is bought up by younger kids these days, and they are getting processed cool shoved down their throat by mtv, and their friends are listening to it, they have no chance to form their own opinions. The big problem is lack of individualism with people who are actually buying the music.

And the RIAA blames the lack of records sales on downloads. Which is partially true. But who's going to spend 18 bucks on a cd with maybe 3 good songs on it?

the problem with the music scene is that people see bands get famous fast so they imitate the sound because they're not into it for the love of music they're in it for the money... if you want music that sounds different from other bands try independent labels they're not obsessed with making money, they play for their love of music
