Is balding a really masculine phenomenon?

Apparently it has to do with the production of DHT which is part of the Testosterone hormone. The higher levels of DHT cause baldness, but if DHT is lowered or blocked...it affects sexual function. So DHT in the scalp area is the problem. Women do produce some Testosterone and therefore low levels of DHT. This does cause womens hair to recede and thin as they get older. But it's minimal. Some women do produce larger amounts of DHT and lose their hair.

The gene for male pattern baldness is carried on the X chromosome. It is a single expression recessive gene.

Men have one X chromosome, and one Y chromosome, whereas women have two X chromosomes. Women are only able to pass on X chromosomes to their children (as that's all they have) where as men can pass on either the X chromosome (giving the child two X chromosomes, and making her a girl), or the Y chromosome (giving the child one X and one Y, making him a boy).

As the gene for baldness is carried on the X chromosome, and men can only received their X chromosome from their mother, this means you actually get male pattern baldness from your mother.

Since men have only one X chromosome, baldness occurs because there is no possible dominant gene to suppress what would normally be a recessive or hidden characteristic. As women have the XX chromosome pair, baldness will not occur unless both chromosomes have the recessive gene that causes baldness.

Men have hereditary predisposition to baldness. Not all men but many.
Women usually have this problem when hormones go out of whack. Like during menopause or when they have a thyroid problem.
But women are prone to stress related baldness. Most men dont worry about their hair when they are under stress. For women we lose hair easily during times of stress.

Also women can lose hair after pregnancy but then it usually grows back. But it will never get back to the same thickness a women had before giving birth.

Another reason for hair loss in women is lack of good Nutrition.
Women are always dieting and cutting calories. Some get Anorexic or Bulimic and they always lose hair. It the hair shaft does not get proper nourishment and oxygen, a women will lose hair and a man too.

Fighting hair loss is one of the worst maladies a person will ever go through. Everyone sees your head and your hair and they judge you by how you look. Men can cover their bald spot with hats but what about women. We need more cures.

Balding is linked to heavy testosterone, the male hormone. Men have it, much more than women. The female hormone is estrogen.
