A spiderweb is an active web. A cobweb is an old spiderweb that the spider has abandoned. It collects dust and just hangs around for a while.

I agree with Heather. A cobweb has nothing to do with spiders, it is just dust hanging together. But I guess an old abandoned spiderweb that collects dust would be BOTH a spiderweb and a cobweb.

I think that in general, a cobweb is an inactive spider web-- the spider or spiders have gone, leaving the web to get dusty and tattered. A spiderweb is an active web, with an occupying spider, and is in good repair and pristine condition.

A cobweb is spun by a spider. Yep, it's a manner of speech.....whatever you grew up with. Hey, good point, Dawn.
