It shouldn't, but I think that the required amount of free space for Vista is 40gb.

You should post your system specs as well, Vista needs a hefty amount of processing power and ram in order to run properly.

Times have changed. We no longer need to struggle with dual boot partitions. Don't complicate yourself, do this.

Get:
-An extra Hard Drive; they're not expensive now. You can get a cheap one at ebay, less than $20.
-A removable case for hard drives (if you want to go the extra mile, get an extra tray, so that each drive has its own). They're not expensive either, shop around for a $10-$15 one.

Installation:
Extract your current disk.

Insert the spare one; make sure to connect the little jumper in the back, as a master, according to its specifications on the label.

Reboot from CD-rom and install the newly Windows.

You're done.

This may sound a little complicated, but once you get your hands on the action, you'll even enjoy it. A huge advantage of this is that you can install as many OS as you want. Ever wanted to install and try Linux or the like?

Easy, just swap a new (cheap if you want) hard drive and repeat the installation for each OS you want.

You want to reboot with another OS? Easy! Just shut down the computer>
Take out the Current hard drive>
Insert the one with the OS you want>
Reboot>
DONE!

In about a minute you can boot from one OS to the other. Shut down, 25 seconds; swap the tray, 15 seconds; boot up, 25 seconds.

Forget the frustration most people face trying to do the bootable partitions.

I hope you like this suggestion. I've done it my self, and I'm no computer wiz.

Good Luck,

Vista will wrap xp's boot.ini into a new one.
other than that it doesnt change the c drive..
I am presumeing that you are currently booting xp from the cdrive and want to make vista dual boot from the d_drive(or e,f,g...)?
11.5 gig is not enough recommended space either...16GB is recommended for minimum!

If you want serious support I can be available.
Help you with a dual boot install and other ideas.
