It's not too difficult. What kind of router did you get? What you'll want to do is plug an ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN (Internet) port of the router. Then another ethernet cable goes from a LAN port on the router into the back of your PC (I'm assuming you have a desktop).
Modem--->Router---->PC
Next you'll need to configure the router. Make sure everything is plugged in correctly and go to a web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer) on the PC that's attached to the router. Then in the URL (address) bar type in:
For linksys: 192.168.1.1
For netgear (and d-link I believe) it's: 192.169.0.1
Check your user guide if it's not one of the above.
It should prompt you for a username and password.
Default for linksys: username: (leave blank) password: admin
Default for netgear: username: admin password: password
Once inside you better change your username/password to something more secure-->THAT'S how your router can get hacked (and your PC too).
Since you have a wireless router, then password protect THAT too, with a WEP or WPA (network key or password) or whatever security option is available in the Wireless Security part of your router's web interface. If you don't do this, then anyone around your house can see and latch on to your wireless network....NOT GOOD!
There shouldn't be too many things you'll need to set up or change, but again...check your user guide if you're not sure of something.
If you want to reset everything back to Factory Defaults, there should be an option for that somewhere inside OR you can look for a small reset button on the outside of the router (hold it in for 15-30 seconds).

Its quite easy...A software CD comes with every router install it only if your computer does not have wireless capability. If your PC doesn't have a wireless card then you will have to use that small piece with an antenna and this should be connected to your computer and install the software .......then the rest of the installation is self intuitive and if your PC / laptop has wireless capabilities then you just need to connect the modem to the router and your PC will detect the wireless signal and you just have to hit connect. Then speak to the manufacturer About making it a secure connection.

Hi, am pleased you got it sorted. I remember when I first got broadband, installed the usb modem and software, waited for the date I was to be switched on and thought this is not going to work. It didn't so I rang up my service provider after about an hour of checking everything and he said 'have you put a filter on all your phones. I said yes. How many phones you got? 3 I said. So he replied how can you have filters on all your phones when we only supply you with 2???? DOH. Unplugged the phone and I was on.
Next step was to get our xbox on line. Bought an ethernet card for the pc, plugged it into the xbox and after hours and hours configuring the ip settings did it. Then it was time for a modem router which took me 5 minutes to set up. Thanks to Netgear who make a fantastic product. Think it helped though spending all those previous hours fiddling. Hardest thing I have had to do is configure a wireless gaming adapet for another xbox. Not easy but that was thanks to Belkin lol
If anyone out there needs help in getting their xbox's online wired or wireless I would be pleased to help.
Well done with the router

Pretty easy Smurfette, if you just follow the instructions. However, a little secret I found out is that Linksys will talk you thru the setup and made it quite easy to set the security on the network. Chances are, the other manufacturers will too. Good Luck

Pretty simple. Just follow the users manual or setup guide. Also if in doubt, check the manufacturers website for additional info.

all you need to do is connect the cable/dsl modem to the internet port and then set the ssid, channel and i suggest setting up a wep key.
if you just want it set up fast you can skip setting up wep, but anyone will be able to access your network and your internet if dont.
