Blue **** 25mm
Great **** 28mm
House Sparrows 32mm
Starlings 45mm
Try making a Sparrow Terrace - it"s 3 nest boxes in one section.
I"ve put one up and it has attracted a lot of attention already this season.
If you search under "nest boxes" it will show you all the dimensions for building nest boxes.
Try it, it"s fun.

There is no standard, accurate design for a nestbox. Birds do not insist on their nest sites being mathematically precise! What they do require is a nest site which is secure and weatherproof, and as safe as possible from predators. Different bird species favour different types and locations of nesting sites, and so boxes must be constructed accordingly to meet these different needs. Two basic designs however will accommodate most common garden birds; either a partly open-fronted box, or a box with a circular hole at the front (of varying diameter for different species).
hope this helps

The answers on here are fully comprehensive, extra notes - don't put the bird house up so it faces the sun - it will be too hot in there and not used. Do place it somewhere quiet and near to cover. Birds like to perch close and have a look around before flying into the box.

If you want to attract nesting Blue T..ts then a hole no bigger than 28mm is required.
Sparrow;32mm:Starling;45mm.
Blackbird likes an open nest entrance.
Request a catalogue from CJ Wildlife(0800 731 2820)it's full of useful info.

It depends on what kind of birds you want to attract. Different species of birds like different sizes and shapes. Isn't that cool?

It depends on what kind of bird you are trying to attract, check on line or go to the library and check out what is recommended for the type of bird you want.

Depends what sort of birds you want nesting in there, if you want to encourage say Sparrows or T*ts, then no more than 2 inch diameter; otherwise bigger birds can steal the eggs and chicks.. Good luck.
