Ok, so a couple weeks ago my husband got a 20 gallon tank from someone he was working with and they gave him four fish to go with it: A silver dollar, two jellybean cichlids, and a little irredesent long-tailed minnow shaped one.
I knew the cichlids would grow big and we don't have room for a bigger tank so I know I'll have to find them a new home.
How fast do they grow? Right now one is just under 3.5 inches and the other is 4.5 inches.

The "give them to a fish store theory" is good except....the nearest one is 2 hours away. lol.
I doubt Mr. Silver Dollar Fish is going to get any bigger (he's probably just barely 3 inches). His previous owners had him for 4 and a half years so my guess is he's at least 5 years old if not older. I don't think fish grow that much in their senior years. :)

Your jelly bean cichlids can get up to 8" long and they grow fairly quickly. You shoul dbe looking for that new home very soon. If all else fails a good pet store should take them inexchange for some store credit.
The silver dollar can also out grow your tank eventually so you will probably be doing the same with it down the road.

They are already getting too large for the 20 gallon. Cichlids are aggressive and need more territory than a 20 gallon can provide. Start looking now. Hopefully by the time you find a new home for them the rest of your fish will still be alive.

cichlids can get up to 6 inches long i believe. depending on what type they are. we have had ours for a couple of months and they have grown 2 inches

From everything that I know, the biggest they get is 3-4 inches, so they are fully grown.
