Is Sherlock Holmes British?

The two ahead of me have already said Sherlock Holmes but until fairly recently (1950's) all the Sherlock Holmes stories were required reading for the Hong Kong police force when training to become detectives.
I don't know of any text books though for private detectives; I'd suggest developing good instincts, learn a martial art and take up running. Oh, and join AlAnon in advance; it'd save time.
