Yes! Cats, as well as other pets, are GREAT at reducing stress levels. They also are great for the elderly as many times a pet is a great companion to those that are living alone or need something to live for. They are also great to help children (and adults) learn compasion and responsibility.

As far as actual physical help - my in-law's cats alert them to when something is wrong (like a baby crying). Cats (and dogs) have also been known to alert people to things like fire, etc.

I definitely think they do! And I'm talking about practical help as well as emotional help. My cat Frances jumps on my bed and gently reminds me that it's time to get up when I've overslept. (I'm not sure how she knows what time it is, but she does: she never wakes me too early or too late.)

As with most cats, she seems to be able to sense when I'm stressed out, angry, or sad, and comes to the rescue. If there's a better therapy available for stress than holding a purring cat, I haven't found it. It reminds you that being able to receive and return love unconditionally--with a creature that is not even your own species and doesn't even share your language--is proof that small miracles happen every day, if we only pay attention.

They say that having a pet can help the elderly live longer, more fulfilling lives in their old age. They can also teach young children responsibility and kindness to animals. If they are trained, who knows what they could potentially do!

I know that my cat has helped me through some tough times and he is part of the family.

So in short, YES!
