we want to make some slingshots for a pioneer fair and try to be authentic, we make them with rubber bands and things today for the stretch, what did they use then. NOT the shephards sling like david and goliath, the hand slingshots.

I looked around a bit and couldn't find any info that didn't include rubber bands. I'd say take a look at what was available to them at the time--pig bladder, twisted gut or worked hide is probably going to be your best bet. I did find references to very old slingshots (Roman era) but none of them mentioned what they used for bands; probably the materials all rotted. Anyway, I'd be interested to know what you find out, you've got me curious.

Prior to world war two my male friends and I used strips cut from rubber tire inner tubes..
