Preferably the foothill areas of El Dorado County, Amador County, and Placer County. I'm looking to study local breeds, variations, and behaviors for research before I begin looking for species to breed in captivity (in a pond on my property). Thanks!!

I caught a million of them in Palm Springs last time I was there. That's about all I know though.

It would be preferable though not to take animals out of the wild. Make sure you check the laws in California and make sure it is legal. You can purchase salamanders in most pet stores

I always found them under rocks or rotting logs.

i dont know about california but there are many here in ohio,,under every log and rock
