According to my bf, bosom pillows are great... they're warm, soft, and normally attached to someone you like alot and can cuddle lol.

In my experience, there are definitely benefits to a nice soft fleshy surface to lay one's head on but I don't think it's one I could categorise as a "need." I certainly don't have much of a pillow in that department myself and would say my boyfriend does alright nonetheless ;-)
