Arushi, you will get all sorts of answers about this. Thus far answers given are good to read but almost all are empirical. You can brand everything for it: backwardness, lack of education and so on. But the basic reason behind this infanticide is DOWRY system. You annihilate this system and there will be no infanticide.

We are going to end up in a v scary situation. I read in some villages in Bihar one woman is married to many men cos thare is a shortage of women in that village. Even in the big cities like Bombay & Delhi this practice is rampant. Its something so inhumane & backward. It persists cos many ppl in India believe deep down that a woman is a burden other than that there is no justification why it is still prevalent in India

I was disgusted by an article I read about this issue. I'm so appalled by a country of women who actually choose to abort their unborn daughters. There are parts of India and China for that matter, that have a very high ratio of male to female inhabitants. The women are getting harrassed more and more b/c there are less of them! This epidemic is just fueling human trafficing and not just in India. These horrible women need to be educated, and with any luck God might forgive them for this genocide...

It is the women who are hyperactive when it comes to such actions.Every woman however happy she might be wants always a male baby.what to say,no man has ever ventured to kill an unborn baby just because it is female without the active participation and consent of women in India.Only God should see that better sense prevails upon such beasts.

People don't realize that about having babies. People don't realize what it takes to have babies, what happens when you have babies and the future of those who have babies. They need to prevent having babies if they don't want. Legalize birth control and encourage family planning. India is not only country with killing babies. Check out America and other countries. Why is it prevalent here, too? Too much changing of mind. Do we really want a baby or not? Is it economical to have them or not? Ask these questions first. What is the purpose of having babies. To have a family with love and want to be a loving mother. There is safe sex. Think before you have sex. Sex with marriage of couple who can afford as well as who want to love the children.

I think this issue is still there, but more so for people who lack moral education, not just education in general. There is a lot of people who think that women are to stay at home, and cannot work so they are seen as burdens. Once this attitude changes, people will see that women too, can go to work, earn just as much as men, and stand in society as equals.

Think of 'bookeeping' ... put the female child in the 'debits' and the male child in the 'assets' ... to have 'more assets' you need to 'kill off' the debits. Most families in India still believe that to 'earn money' you must be a male ... and they 'kill the infant female' to 'protect her from poverty' as well as to protect the family from 'poverty' they could live in because it costs money to 'raise and marry off a female child' but it costs less money to 'raise a male child' to the point it can earn money.

Because india is a backwards country, with hypocritical values. How a woman can be programmed to hate her own female child, when she herself is a female, is beyond me.
