I wouldn't put a valve in. It's real easy to knock off if you go over something, and you're out an engine. It doesn't help you with the filter, which is the hard part anyway. Use some good Mobil 1, the weight the book recommends. Buy a Clymers for your truck and get started. You'll make a mess the first time, so don't do it where it will be hard to clean up spilled oil. It's best to change it hot, so get ready to say some bad words when you take the drain plug out and get it on your hands. Don't overtighten the drain plug. Don't overtighten the new filter or you'll never get it off the next time. If you use a strap wrench to put the filter on, only use it around the top so you don't crush the thing.
The Clymers will have all the little hints you need, and will help you with a hundred other things too. It's worth the $18.

Best oil to run= synthetic
Buy a fumoto valve for the truck @ www.fumotovalve.com
Buy an oil drain pan
Buy a filter at the auto parts store when you get the oil, or at walmart
Buy a filter removal tool that fits the filter you buy
Buy some latex gloves
Remove the pan bolt and drain the oil into the pan
Install the fumoto valve so you never have to mess with the bolt again
Remove filter and make sure the rubber gasket comes with it.
Wet the rubber gasket on the new one with some oil.
If the filter goes straight up, fill with oil, then install
Pour in oil
Start car and look for leaks

well the best oil filter for that truck is going to be oem filter{AC DELCO}. local parts houses carry this brand all the time. as for the oil, if you look on the oil cap it should tell you what grade to use but as for type it is all a personal preferance. i use valvoline. if the cap does not read what grade the local parts house can help you there to. their computers usually have the specifications for the vehicle being worked on. we all had to start somewhere. just remember. nowadays it is just as cheap to carry it to be done as it is to do it yourself. (oil change that is) good luck
