You can send him a certified letter for demand of payment--- keep the return where he signed for it... in the letter give him 14 business days (or more) to pay up. After he doesn't, file in small claims court... you can find a sample letter for demand of payment online...
Side note: I wouldn't hire an attorney.. they charge a lot-- Yeah, you could sue him for the attorney fee, but the catch is that all you get in court is a "judgement." All it does is says that someone owes you money- not that they have to pay you... he still may never pay up... which means every 10 yrs or so, you have to go to courthouse and sign for the judgement to stay in effect. That way he can't buy property... the next catch is that if he moves to another parish or county, you have to file in that courthouse too to keep the judgement against him.
I would try the letter of demand first and then small claims... if he doesn't pay up-- $800 is a cheap lesson learned... atleast you know now not to give your money to boyfriends (Don't do what I did and make the same mistake twice!! I lost $850 on the first jerk and learned my lesson when the next one cost me over 20k)

You should have a lawyer write the letter, When we flex the legal muscle, people seem to act a little quicker. I am an independent associate for a company. Our lawyers will send an unlimited amount of letters for you. If it ends up that he does not pay, they will take further action for you. If you really want your money back, this service can help you. If you just hire an attorney, it could be $250 just for the letter. Let me know and good luck to you!

Before you take him to court, send him a certified letter that you wrote yourself. That will give you proof in court that he received a letter where you have outlined exactly why he owes you the money.

The lawyer will just threaten and hopefully get a judgement which is useless. If it's only 800.00 and he lives close to you, take him to small claims court. If you need details let me know
