Hi,

I am planning to buy a mac book with the following specs:

# 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 512MB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x256
# 60GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
# Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
# Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
# AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth

I am looking at using the mac book to do

1. internet browsing
2. chatting
3. office related work like document preparations (word and spreadsheet types)
4. watching movies
5. listening to music

I do not intend to run do any graphics and video editing with my mac book. Will 512 be sufficient to operate mac book, its default software and carry out the above activities without any slow downs?

Thank You.

For $200 more I'd upgrade to the next level. You'll get a 2 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, and a DVD burner.

For what you are saying you are going to do with it there is no need to spend any more money on RAM if there is a chance that you are not going to use it.

You are right you would only need to upgrade if you are going to do something with graphics
I am not going to lie a 1 gig makes the whole experience alot more smother and there will be less interruptions

It's good enough for what your planning on using it for. If for some reason you might want to use the iLife apps e.g. iMovie or iDVD in the future, I suggest you upgrade the RAM to at least 1 GB and opt for the SuperDrive so you can burn DVDs. You don't have to let Apple upgrade the RAM for you, it would be cheaper if you upgraded it on your own. There should be instructions on 'how to' in the manual.

It should be OK but I would still recommend 1Gb at least. I ran on 512 for awhile, everything just runs smoother with 1Gb. And it really is not that much to upgrade you should consider it. I don't think any computer these days should run on less than 1gb.

This is a toy by my standards. I would say no. Unless you just surf the net and do basic office applications.
