Good Luck! I coach a competitive football cheer squad. I look for a grand, spirited entrance (remember, do not yell 'whooo' yell, we're # 1, Go Wolverines, etc.) someone who is very attentive and shows that they can work hard and learn fast. A supportive personality, I do not want anyone on my squad who is going to create drama! Good strong movements, someone who knows their strengths and weaknesses. You should take the time to perfect your tumbling, don't take the roundoff or cartwheel for granted, it needs to be spot on perfect. Also, get your jumps perfected! You can do those without a gym. When it's time to try out, if you incorporate those good strong jumps in your routine, you will make an impression on the coach. We don't have to have all tumblers, we need good strong athletes to support our squad as bases and jumpers as well! Also, don't be apologetic at your weaknesses, I get tired of hearing 'I'm sorry' when it's not necessary, try to phrase your reactions to critisisms in ways that reflect your willingness to work. I want to hear "yes ma'am, I'll work on that" or "yes, Ma'am you'll see a difference next practice" Those are the things that come to mind right off. Be supportive and encouraging of your other teammates, always ALWAYS have a smile on your face, and be gracious with your thank you's. With hard work, REAL work, not just playing at it, anyone can make my squad. I wish you all the luck!

Just make sure at tryouts, you have a routine ready. Think of an easy cheer, but with a few cartwheels or jumps. Make sure you smile and keep eye contact with the coaches or judges. They will want to see that you are confident!
