A betta is an excellent choice for a 1 gallon tank. There are other choices, but many of them are harder to keep than bettas. Go for one male betta and if you have a filter you could add one dwarf cory catfish.

As side notes you should feed bettas like any other fish, daily not once a week! Also, don't fall into the trap of a goldfish. Even the smallest one's get to 6-7" when they are grown and need at least 20 gallons to do well.

Best of luck and have fun with it!

A goldfish WOULD NOT do nicely, nor would a betta and a cory cat. A single betta could perhaps live in a one gallon, but as already mentioned that is rather small and should not be attempted without adequate filtration. People seem to think that because bettas breathe atmospheric oxygen, they somehow don't need filtration. This is completely false; while they don't need aeration the water does need to be clean for them to live any length of time. Unless you are prepared to do 50% water changes every couple of days, I suggest you find some sort of filtration.
Betta aside, there are some things that can be kept in a 1 gallon with filtration- ghost shrimp would be an excellent choice. They stay small, put out very little waste, and are very fun to watch. Another choice might be a pair of fancy guppies, but you'll have to net out all the babies they produce- these can often be sold back to the store. (score!) Note that when I say a pair, I mean a male and a female, not simply two fish. Males are the brightly coloured ones, wheras females are comparably quite drab, and usually larger in size, with less finnage.
Bon Chance! (and for the sake of my conscience, PLEASE stay away from the goldfish!)

as long as you have bubbles and a filter and light.
you can have 1/2 dozen guppies or Betta and 2 neon tetras, one gourami and tetras or a new fish i just found a golden killifish w/ 2 guppies.
snails do good in that size and they'll keep it clean.
small fancy goldfish are OK but they need they're tank cleaned a lot they're poop machines.
Betta and gouramis are the only ones i know of that can go without bubble's they breath from the surface.
I know a teenager not know anything about keeping a tank have a Betta, three tetras and catfish in a one gallon, they are still alive two years later.
so anything its your imagination really. just make sure to look up how big the fish get on-line and compatibility chart(www.liveaquaria.com)!!
but I like guppies they are very lively. bettas have lots of personality they like to be talked to and they will do tricks for food!!

Well, a betta can be kept in one, they are used to it. However, I would invest in a 5 gal for a betta. It is more humane and he will be more active.

Right now I have a 1gal set up with an internal filter and six ghost shrimp. i also have a 1gal with a small african clawed frog... I find them amusing and my fish in my 29 and 55gal's would eat them. So really, thats all you can keep in a 1 gal for a long time. Make sure there is a good filter in there, a whisper internal filter for 1-3gal tanks works well. I like it, but be warned, its teeny tiny.

Well, good luck. If you get a frog, upgrade to a 10gal when he gets bigger.

A betta fish would really be your best bet. They are very hardy fish and do very well with limited space. A lot of people would reccomend goldfish but they create much more waste and secrete ammonia that dirties the tank up MUCH quicker, they are also more prone to disease and illness. Good luck with whatever fish you choose!

A 1 gallon tank is way to small for most fish. You should really only have 1 inch of fish tops for that.

I suggest getting a betta. Easy to care for and a lot bigger then most betta homes

Plants, a snail or two, some shrimps maybe. You shouldn't keep any fish in a one gallon container. No aquatic livestock will be happy or healthy in one gallon - despite what your fish store owner will tell you in attempts to sell you a betta. Bettas or smaller guppies (Endless liverbearer for example) can probably live in one gallon, but they will be miserable and most likely unhealthy and short-lived.

Change a lot of water. 100% at least weekly. Do not keep goldfish in there. Beta is the only fish suitable.

An honest answer to this would be a dead fish. That's likely what you'd end up with no matter what kind of fish you put in that small a container.

the ONLY fish that can live in a 1 gallon tank is a betta, even then it's a little on the cosy side.

maybe keep a flower in that, and get a bigger tank for fish.
