Squeak Ender is the BEST product to use, if you can access the floor from underneath. Ive fixed hundreds of squeaks with this product, and they stay fixed.

If you cannot access the floor from underneath, then you can buy special #6 screws with a bugle head, that will pull thru your carpet, without snagging it.

Another option is a product that uses a 3 prong device to set the screw to a particular height, then you use the device to snap the exposed screw head off. This uses special screws that are designed to snap off.

Ive used both the #6 screws, and the device I just mentioned - the big drawback with these, is that it can take you a few tries to locate, exactly, where floor joist is at, and to eliminate the squeak. I prefer the Squeak Ender product above all others.

Listen to it carefully. Is it the sound of loose boards rubbing against each other? Or is it the sound of loose carpet padding rubbing on wood? If you really can't tell, try doing some experimental rubbing and listening.

Once you figure out what's rubbing on what, the answer will be obvious. Find a way to make it stop rubbing. That might involve glue or nails or whatever works best for that problem. In any case, it's going to be a lot of work, so you should be sure getting rid of the squeak is really your highest priority, before you start the work. Because, once you start, you're committed to finishing the job ASAP, so you can use that room again. I personally would just ignore it, because squeaks don't bother me that much, but everyone has their own priorities.

My Sister used a new product that is a screw that goes in right over the carpet. They go in a predetermined length then break off below the surface of the carpet, they sell them at the hardware stores. She sold her house more quickly with all the squeaks gone!

No quick fixes without pulling up the carpet to deal with the wood underneath.

screw through the carpet and pad to fasten the sub floor to the joist. the head of the screw will pull right through. be careful not to run if the carpet is closed loop.once done you will not be able to find the hole that you put in the carpeting or pad.
