As has already been pointed out, Sony is already losing money on each console. About 300 per 20GB and 400 per 60GB. The reason the cost is so much more than other gaming consoles is because its more of a computer entertainment console than a gaming console. At this moment, you cant see much difference, definately not enough to spend 200 dollars more on a PS3. However, in time PS3 will be the more superiour system due to the capacity of the Blu-Ray discs... Unless PS3 caves, then im screwed out of my 600 dollars that I gambled.
The main reason that the PS3 can't be 400 dollars though everything to do with blu-ray, wait about 2 1/2 3 years, when the blu-ray takes a substantial dip in price, so will the PS3s.

listen bro, when i first got my ps3, i got it about a week after launch, i played out resistance and got pissed that there werent any more games. and i read on here how all the 360 fans laugh at people like me because we have no games. well march has arrived. go look at the lineup of games coming out in the next month. its going to shut up all the 360 fanboys. have you seen motor storm. it comes out wednesday and it looks amazing. i know you cant compare the two but i personally think motorstorm has way better graphics than gears of war. its beautiful. the ps2 started off at 400 and people thought that was outragous. it was well worth it. and so is 600 for the ps3. considering sony is losing 310 a system. the blu ray alone is worth 600. and thats not even the reason i got it in the first place. paying that much looked sad a few months ago, but now, things are changing. i bet within 6 months the ps3 will be outselling both the wii and the 360

I haven't looked up all of the details, but from what I've heard, the PS3 cost $600 because of how much the production of the machine cost... They actually LOSE money each time they sale one, so they have to have a high price so that way they aren't losing as much for each successful PS3 sale. After all, if you spent $600 on a machine, you are more then likely going to buy games for the system at well.

Sony is losing about 300 bucks for every PS3 sold, that includes both versions.
Sony has to sell it for 600 bucks because it's already losing money for every PS3 sold, and Sony has a price point on how much it is willing to lose in order to push the Blu-ray format. Apparently, it's about 300 bucks.
The PS3 isn't cheap to make because of the Blu-ray format. The raw materials needed to make the Blu-ray is in short supply, so it's expensive, and it's reflected in the PS3's price.
Sony can charge 600 bucks because of the Playstation name. Sony knows that people will buy the PS3 because of the Playstation name.

If any of the next gen consoles are over priced, it's the 360. It would cost you several hundred more to get an x-box 360 with half of the features the premium PS3 offers. (Add a hard drive, craptastic hd-dvd drive, wireless router, pay for online gaming, etc.) Sony is offering an incredibly high quality high performance gaming console for an EXCELLENT price.

I wanted to correcty people about the thought that Sony loses money on each system. This is true, yet false. Microsoft's XBOX is also sold over $200 short. This is because they make the rest of the money (and even more) through their sponsors and titles. They are not losing money. They can just sell it for cheaper, since they make more money in other ways.
And Sony's Playstation 3 is a superior system, but WILL NOT be superior in gaming.

because people are stupid enough to pay that much money for it. just wait awhile the price will go down just like all the other game consoles. and all the people will feel stupid when in a year or two they come out with something even better that costs even more.
