normally if they can't check all of the anatomy (that is why they are really doing the ultrasound) they will reschedule another one.
for both of my pregancies they had a hard time finding everything. they would make me move side to side (at one point i was almost so far over i was half on my belly) i had to walk around and go pee. for my 2nd pregncy i ended up sore and with brusies on my hip bones from them digging in to try an dfind everything.
i wouldn't worry about it to much you can always reschedule, get another oner one, or con your dr into giving/getting you another one-i asked for another one just to double check-my dr did it in the office and sent me to get one done b/c i told him i didn't trust the later b/c she had such a hard time finding evrything.
as for your size just make sure your eating healthy and the right type of food. if your dr is considered they should check for other symptoms regarding your weight (like diabetes) ask if your concerned.

Nothing you can do .. it's all luck .. As for your size .. what do you measure when the doc checks .. many things factor in to how you "look" but actual measurments are what matter
I had to edit my answer .. a pregnant woman is NOT eating for 2, you are only supposed to increase your caloric intake by 300 calories!! The goal in pregnancy isn't to gain 50-100 pounds its 25 - 35 pounds if you are of normal weight. Too many women "eat for 2" then don't understand why it's so hard to get rid of the "baby weight" what they dont realize is excess fat weight is not baby weight it's fat.
Oh and eating and drinking a lot before your ultrasound is not a good idea .. if the baby is overly active it isn't likely you will find a gender and more importantly it could make it hard for the tech to get what they are there for .. heart lungs brain kidneys ect ... gender is the last thing a tech needs to worry about finding, the 20 week u/s is vital!! A penis or vagina don't mean anything if there aren't any kidneys, or only half a heart.

The ultrasound tech will be able to move the baby around using her hands but there is still a chance they wont be able to tell. Most likely you will find out so its not something you should be stressing about. Remember unnecessary stress isn't good for the baby. I was huge then also I didn't grow as much later in my pregnancy. Everyone changes differently. Good luck.

OK everyone here, get real! luck my...! I've had 6 - YES 6 kids! first of all if they cant get a clear shot of the sex then sit up a little, movwe around a little so the baby will move and you get a better shot, plus at your dr visits, if the hear rate is faster its usually a boy if lower, girl ask the doc if its faster, on a regular basis, or slower. this on a consistant basis, this can ofetn be pretty telling as to the sex, also if you cant get the sex of the baby dont worry I know it sux, but they will possibly do another before you have it. On the subjact of being bigger, I had that with my 3rd child, every one said it was normal, but then I went into labor and she was so big she got stuck on the way out, dont worry they broke my tail bone and got her out, if they would have thought before I couldnt have a baby that size, she was 10 lbs, they would ahve done a c-sec, but they didnt, but it all turned out good. If you start getting alot of pain in the sides of your stomach, especially when you are further along, I would demand a scan to determine the childs size. discuss this with your doctor now

I wouldnt worry to much about not being able to tell the sex of the baby. Most of the time they will be able to tell by the ultrasound. Ive heard that sometimes if the baby is not postioned well, then the Doc may be able to move him/her around without any harm to the baby. It's possible that you could be carrying twins I guess if you look larger than 17 weeks according to your friends, but the only way to know for sure is by getting that ultrasound. Everyone told me that I looked larger than my time, but I only have one on the way. Good luck to ya :)

I'm going on Tuesday for my scan & I feel the same way. Friends suggested sugary drinks or snacks to make baby active.....the techs should also give baby a little tap on the belly to help the movement.
As for the weight, everyone's different. I'm 19 1/2 & starting to look OBVIOUSLY pregnant, while a friend is 18 & doesn't look even chubby. It's all body type.

Sadly for you there really isn't anything you can do about it! With my 2nd child I really wanted to find out. Went in for my ultrasound - drank all the water like they told me - couldn't see a thing! Got up - walked around - tried to make the baby move - nothing! My dr office felt it a personal challenge to find out - next 2 appointments they did an ultrasound to try and see. Baby was just shy I guess - didn't find out until she was born! :-)
Good luck - it's the best kind of surprise to have, right?!?

There is nothing you can do to make sure you can see the babys sex. Its all about luck.
As for my baby, He was waving his little penis high and proud in the air, as to say "Look mommy!!! Im a BOY!!!" lol.
If they can't tell right now, they might be able to at your next ultrasound appointment. Good Luck.

Make sure you drink 16 oz. of water (which is required for a sonogram) and EAT something before you go in! I had 2 slices of pizza before my ultrasound (after drinking the 16 oz. of water) and the baby was very active. They said eating food makes the baby move more!
Also, they will have you lay on your side if the baby doesn't spread eagle!
We saw a penis and scrotum when I turned to my left side :)
Good luck! God bless!

i had mine done at 17 weeks and they were able to tell, but it all depends on how the baby is lying. My ultrasound tech went ahead and pushed a prodded all over my belly with the transducer in order to get him to move, he cooperated. You can worry about it, but I wouldn;t...as it is all up to him or her if he or she is going to give you a peek. There is so much other stuff we worry about, I wouldn;t pile more up on top of everything else. Good luck and I hope you are able to find out!
