Hi, please take time to read my answer. DON'T buy Dell or packard bell or advent which is made by packard bell PLEASE PLEASE don't buy off ebay unless you can go see it first and collect it and pay cash. I know paypal will protect you if you don't get the item but how do you know if the laptop you are buying is new. It could have been a demo and have been left on 10 hours a day for the last 3 months.

Look online at some of the sites mentioned in the other answers but also look at www.ebuyer.co.uk They offer an excellent next day service.

Last August was my son's 16th birthday and we decided to buy him a laptop. We didn't want one at the bottom end of the range but had a budget which was £500. We didn't want packard bell as we had had 2 desktops of theirs which were not cheap but were rubbish. My sister buys Dell for the large company she works for so have first hand knowledge of their reliability and support (Not very good). In the end we bought an Acer 5612wlmi with dual core processore, 1gb ram, 80 gig hard drive, dual layer dvd re-writer with intel 950gma graphics. This is the only intel onboad graphics which supports windows vista. The laptop was a bit over budget at £620 but we knew someone who worked at comet and got 10% off. My son uses this laptop for web design.

We were so impressed with the acer that we decided to buy a cheap budget one. I just purchased an acer 3692 wlmi with the same spec as my son's without dual core and a 60gig hard drive for £400. The machine has a far beter spec than some of the more expensive laptops and is an absolute bargain. Good thing about acer is it doesn't come with all the rubbish software you don't need. For £499 you can get a dual core laptop with an excellent spec. See the comet link below. Don't buy a second hand one and remember that the main reason that pc's go wrong is nothing to do with the hardware but the software or how the user uses the software with regards to downloading etc.

If I was in the market now to buy a cheap latop I would buy the acer from comet or the hp thats advertised on the ebuyer site for £419.99

Whatever machine you buy
