So many good places to go, get yourself a Time Out or Lonely Planet guide book....

Been there so many times it's like a second home but love going back to old places to revisit. First time I saw the SF skyline coming in from the airport bought a tear to my eye.

Some of my favourites are Coit Tower, Ghiradelli Square, The Cannery, Palace of Fine Arts, The Exploratorium and the walk along Cressy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge. Do the Alcatraz evening cruise and come back at sunset to see the lights over SF. Take a ferry out to Sausalito and spend an afternoon wandering round the galleries. Get a ticket to "Beach Blanket Babylon". Spend a day in Golden Gate Park and visit the Zoo and Cliff House Beach. If you've got the time, take a trip out to Napa too. Could go on but you'll probably get bored.

Avoid Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf like the plague.

If you stay in San Francisco for over a week you should have time to see, in my opinion, the most important/best sights.
Unmissable: take a cable car ride from Powell St Cable Car Turnaround to Hyde St Pier, from here you can walk along to Fisherman´s Wharf & Pier 39, visit Chinatown, take a whole morning just for Golden Gate Park and of course take a walk or bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge and back.
The North Beach area is a great place to go for an italian meal, and if you're on a budget there are 3 or 4 "Lori´s Diners" in the city with great cheap food.
Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill, Lombard St, the Victorian houses at Alamo Square, the Embarcadero, Alcatraz, the view from Twin Peaks, the TransAmerica Pyramid, Union Square shopping!!! There are so so many great things to see and do in SF that you will want to return to see any you've missed, and have a closer look everything.
It is a rather expensive city, but you can find great relatively cheap souveniers at Pier 39 and in Chinatown.

Union Square (the Westfield Shopping Center is amazing!), Chinatown, and Japantown (feels like you're in Japan), Golden Gate Park, Financial District.

However, avoid the Tenderloin and Hunter's Point... especially during night time when drugs and prostitutes are everywhere.

Other than those two places, San Francisco is truely a beautiful city. In fact I'm going this weekend for the annual Chinese New Years Festival in Chinatown. :]

Of course, Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf. Scoma's Restaurant is my favorite on the Wharf. Pricey, but you get what you pay for.
