accounts solely in married name. Not to mention I have other things such as academics, credit cards etc.. in both. I'm looked at as two people at times( screwed up I know) I have tried to rectify this, but it seems I can't with out changing my name legally? Will this hinder my chances of claiming my assets, if marraige is disolved or spouse dies? This is mearly a question, I do not whish my spouse harm or to say our marriage will end. Question being: will hyphening my name protect me? Thus, to say he pulled a stunt about a year ago freezing my assets, when I temporarily separated from him.

The laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but generally changing your name or listing an asset in your name solely will do nothing. If you are married everything is in common. You need to read these two articles badly. They will shed light on what can be done. If you act now you can avoid a lot of mess later. I recommend an offshore banking / offshore asset protection strategy. Read these 3 articles and you will get the picture:

If I were you, I would seek legal advice. As far as I'm aware of, you can only have ONE official name; when you marry, and you want to use your husband's name, you need to change it legally - otherwise, you're supposed to use your own name. I don't know how your use of both names can affect your property rights, ets. It's a good question, and I think you should definitely consult a knowlegeable professional.

(P.S. What is the reason you're using both names? If you don't want to change your name legally, why not just continue using your maiden name?)

if you legally took his name when you married you need to change your ss. card. you can't renew you d.l. if it has a different name anymore. hyphening can help in some instances.ask at the ss office. they may be able to help more since everything is based on your ss number.
