Has anyone taken 1 or 2 oz of castor oil to start labor. I know of friends doctors and midwifes that actually suggested this. Does it work or did it for you and how long.

Yes, it does work. However don't take that much. A tablespoon should do it. I did this with my 3rd child. I had been having contractions for 2 days on and off. Finally, I said that's it. I stopped and picked up some castor oil. I took it at 6 or 7 on a Sunday night. Then I regretted it for the next 3 hours, cuz I spent that time on the toilet. I was mad. I didn't think it worked. Well I went to bed and woke up at 6:30 am with contractions. (I was only 35 weeks) I called the Dr., spent the whole day in the hospital for my labor to stop. I was 3-4 cm dilated and 90% effaced. They sent me home. I cried and told them I wasn't going home. But they insisted. Well 4 hours later I was back in the hospital and I had my daughter at 1:07 am on Tuesday morning. It worked but the consequences are not fun. I never told the nurses I took it for fear of getting yelled at. But hey if they could do it 20 years ago and still make the product, then it can't hurt you too much right. :)

it contracts all your stomache muscles. It will only send you into labor if you and the baby are fully ready. most of the time when people use castor oil they are already somewhat dialated and effaced and just use it to speed up the process. Other wise you will just spend a lot of time feeling icky in the bathroom and it can make you VERY dehydrated.

My friend did it on her due date. She was i think 3 cm d. and somewhat effaced she said she wasnt really feeling much with her contractions and then she took three teaspoons of it and was in the hospital 12 hours later giving birth. Shes the only one i know that it helped with and it might not have actually helped since she was already starting labor. EVERYONE else says it didnt do anything except give them the runs.

But if you want to try it you should talk to your doctor about it first.

Yes, it absolutely works. My mother used it for myself and my sister to be born. And, I used it for my son to be born. I took the castor oil and started feeling pains within a few hours. He was born within the next 24 hours.

I've heard that if you're ready to go anyway, then it could bring on labor...but if you're not ready, then you will just get diarrhea. You know, you have to be "on the fence", ready to fall over to the side of labor anyway.

However, I also want to mention that when my son was born he had jaundice and breathing problems for the first week and spent the first week of his life in the NICU...and I've always wondered if it was because I rushed labor in this way. I've always felt a sense of guilt about it....I mean, he's fine now (he's a teenager now), but I'll always wonder about his first days of life, if they were difficult because of me taking the castor oil.

Whatever you decide, best of luck to you and your baby.

I did, my labor pains had already started, but were not that strong..I put a little bit in a glass of milk...not sure how long it took to kick the labor into high gear, the child I did that with turned 7 yesterday.

castor oil is a laxative that helps speed things up, other than the baby. I suggest trying to drink red raspberry tea and sitting on a exercise ball.

castor oil usually works only because it its a laxative that works in many ways it gives you the urge to empty your bowels but also your uterus which is why it usually puts you into labour... but it would be really uncomfortable to have the runs and be in labour at the same time so i wouldnt recomend it,,, put a couple drops of blue cohosh and then black cohosh on your tongue... its much safer and more comfortable! good luck

I took 2TBSP in a large glass of OJ and had the baby exactly 24 hrs later. It caused massive diarrhea for several hours, which was good because it finished before my water broke, and I didn't poop during delivery! I was one week early and my boy is healthy healthy healthy!!!

It will give you diarhea. It may start labor, or then gain, you may just get dehydrated. It'd not worth it to me.

Do not do any such thing. You should be in a hospital, with your labor being induced by a professional, if you are overdue. If you are not overdue, cool it, Momma! Rest up, you're gonna need it!
