Are you talking ALL natural, as in out in the woods with no hope of medical attention in the event of a crisis? The potential for maternal or fetal mortality could be much higher in cases like that.

Under normal circumstances however, in a modern medical setting, about 7 women per 100,000 die annually from childbirth in the 15-19 age range, whereas 28 women per 100,000 die annually from childbirth in the 40-44 age range.
Obviously, birth related deaths rise with the age of the mother, and dramatically so after the ages of 30-34.

Additionally, contraceptive method failure resulting in full term pregnancies see higher rates of maternal mortality than no fertility method used. For example, in women aged 40-44, who are oral-contraceptive users who also smoke, 117 women per 100,000 will die, versus the statistics cited above. This is the highest mortality group, and obviously has outside influence in the matter of birth related danger.

The only way I think that it could be risky is if you have certain medical problems. I gave birth to an 8lb 1oz baby boy using nothing and I don't plan to use meds for the next one, whenever that may be. He and I were perfectly fine aside from being tired and hungry. Using an epidural or other kinds of pain relief during labor may slow things down from my understanding. Sometimes the doctors have little choice but to use meds. Most of the time (as far as I know) it is for speeding up the processes because the baby is at risk for trouble. This is really a question for your doctor, who would know you and your history and able to give you a more personal and professional answer. If you are healthy I would say go for the all natural!! You will know rather quickly if you can make it through without any pain relief! When it comes to pushing... I can only tell you that I wasn't focused on pain, I was more into the pushing... I never even felt it when I ripped! Horror stories will scare you but every birth is different so do not judge it on what you have been told! I walked alot while pregnant and I think that it helped alot... I was in labor for 4 hours before giving birth to a beautiful child. Again ask your doctor! He will be able to give you the best answer for you.

Compared to what? And for whom? How are you defining 'natural'?

C-sections are riskier than vaginal births for both the mother and child unless the c-section is medically indicated-truly medically indicated. Emergency c-sections are more risky than planned c-sections...

Home birth attended by a qualified caregiver is less risky than hospital birth. Hospital birth is less risky than birthing on the freeway. It has been said that driving to the hospital is the riskiest part of the birth process!

The thing to bear in mind when assessing risk is it is a balancing act. No two situations are the same. One needs to weigh the risk against the benefits...sometimes what seems to be a riskier option is not and vise versa. While home birth with a midwife is for most people the least risky option, there are some scenarios where that is not the case, which does not make home birth nor midwives a risky option.

There are a lot of statistics surrounding birth safety and risk assessment. Try googling to get some statistics.

contrary to popular beleif, a cesarean birth is NOT safer or more painfree I mean come on...its major abdominal surgery, they're cutting you open. Natural childbirth is definately the way to go. I had a homebirth (as in NO medical intervention whatsoever) with my first child. (yes, I had a trained professional there to assist if complications arose) My second child was born in a hospital because of slight complications that occured at home. recovery time for the home birth was so much faster. the pain was so much more bearable and easier to manage. Natural birth is so much safer for mom and baby. and its a lot easier to push a baby out when you have not been drugged. Also, natural contractions hurt, but Pitocin induced contractions SUCK ***!

Not as long as you and the baby are doing well. The doctors monitor your progress and your babies progress. I delivered naturally 2 times and then had the epidural for the third delivery. Good luck.
