Should the NHL get rid of the 2nd assist?

I hold goals as a more valuable statistic....the puck can go off your skate and someone else make a great pass to the goal scorer and you get credit for it. I think they should go to 1 assist per goal and get rid of the inflated assist totals

no they shouldn't, but i do think that they should start keeping track of the 1st and 2nd assists separately. a 2nd assist should still count as a point, but it would be interesting to see how many 1st and 2nd assists the player has.

Absolutely not. Oft times the second assist is the one that starts on odd man rush or digs the puck off the boards or makes a brilliant pass to set up a short-handed goal.

These guys deserve recognition for their hard grinding work as much as any goal scorer.

No, but there should be more discretion used in awarding assists. To many assists are awarded because the person was the 2nd last person to touch the puck but was not an intregal element in the goal being scored yet on some goals there could be a third assist awarded.

No they shouldnt. many times that second assist man makes the key play that sets up the goal. If it wasnt for that key pass that goal would not have been scored. Although this doesnt happen all the time. Like you said it could go off a skate or something.

Assists in general need to be re-evaluated. They are too generous sometimes with awarding assists. Second assists are even more unnecessary. I've seen too many incidences where guys like Gretzky was awarded an assist when there should NOT have been one to give. I say take them away. They are only there to pad stats nothing more.
