the reason for this is because of the bleach , it´s not only you that thinks bleach is best thing since sliced bread, but it only makes your clothes grey and yellow color. If you would like your whites white then stop using bleach, for white shirts socks all whites I normally use BIO-TEX a pre-wash powder it helps to keep your clothes white also I use the good old fashioned bar soap for washing clothes , getting those kids white sock clean is a hard job but a little rub with the soap leave free from water letting the soap sock into the fabric for 1 hr then straight to the washing machine on a normal wash . also the more you get your clothes outside and into the sun , the sun will bleach your whites the natural way

it sounds like you have hard water.

This will prevent bleach from working very well, and the bleach will actually cause staining if there is a lot of minerals in your water, its freeing them up from the water to settle on your clothes

an easy way to see if a softener will help is to by some Borax, the 20 Mule Team stuff. Add per the directions to the wash. If the clothes come out looking better you know you have a hard water problem
