what do you think causes a person (aside from being a fad) to get a tattoo?

I can't understand why anyone would want to mar their bodies with illustrations. My son has Star Wars characters on his leg, a spider on his chest and Chinese characters on his arms. I don't get it.

I think people get tattoos to express themsleves. I have 3 tattoos and I got each of them at different stages of my life and they all meant different things to me personally. to other people they might seem silly or stupid but i love them there a form of art and style like peoples fashion or the way they act tattoos are apart of people you can tell alot from them.

There are two types of people who get tattoos, the ones who see it as a fad and the ones who respect it as an art. The first ones are more likely to get a tattoo that they regret and eventually go back to cover it or have it removed.

Some tattoo artists will actually refuse to do certain tattoos that they see as a passing fad.

i do have three tatoos myself, but i only put them on my body when someone i have been close to and has really made their mark on my life has passed. i feel as though they have imprinted themselves on me mentally and emotionally, why not physically?
