Well, believe it or not, EVERY industrialized nation in the world has "interests" in the ME.

Another clue for people is that the governments of industrialized nations aren't in the "business" to make money.

National security is the prime concern and lets face it, defending our nation and our economy does require oil. It is a factor. But it isn't the only factor in protecting our interests.

Overly simplistic answers that imply that the only reason we are there is the oil so that people can become wealthy is...well...overly simplistic.

Managing a nation and protecting its interests cannot be seen by any intelligent person as a simple matter that resolves with simple and easy answers.

America stands for many things, one is that we believe in freedom and it is in our best interest to ally ourselves with nations and causes that are supportive of freedom. That sort of makes a natural divide in the world between those governments that promote freedom and those that empower central governments and dictators existance.

What should America's "real" interest be if not this?

UN - Still believe that they can make a difference somewhere in the world - just as long as they don't have to use force.

NATO - The Evil Empire is gone - what else do they have to do?
