Saw a documentary that said it was a large piece of ice from a comet that instantly vaporized as a result of friction on entering the earths atmosphere.

Sounded plausible to me.

Two theories abound. The first is obviously the meteorite impact, and the second is that the blast was caused by an experiment for free energy transmission conduct by Nikola Tesla.
