I think it was a very silly move! Did you hear Ryan say that he wants to win the cup with New York and bring it home to Edmonton?! Soooo sad!!

Considering others need to be signed on the team, Smyth should have come down if it was only $300k, he walked on the deal just as much as the Oilers did. $300k was obviously enough for Smyth to walk away from the deal, so the Oilers needed to do whats best for the team. They got 2 prospects and a 1st rounder for him.....Obviously Smyth didnt love Edmonton that much after all....save the teary eyed press conference, maybe he should look at getting a new agent if he's that broken up and sign in the offseason

It is a good move. The Oilers are not going to make the playoffs anyway and they could basically trade a player for draft picks and get the player back next year. Smyth will be back playing for the Oilers next year because the Oilers will find the 300,000 they were squelching on earlier. Why not make the deal. If you sign him now you don't make the playoffs anyway. If you trade him you get something back for him and your future, don't make the playoffs and can sign him back to your team at the end of the season. Relax. It's all good.

Ryan Smyth: boo him. He desperate that the settlement grant made to him by potential of the Oilers final season became too inexpensive...yet another money hungry participant without team loyalty. i wish Edmonton followers boo him.

Willie said it best, Smyth is a free agent at the end of the year. It was a smart move on Edmonton's part, they get a few prospects and left on good terms with Ryan so unless he is signs with another team in the off-season, I expect him back.

Its part of hockey. That is the part of hockey I hate. However, its part of the sport. Hockey is a business; the goal is to win not to keep the nicest players around. I am a Flames fan and was very upset at the Kobasew-Ference trade, but, its a part of hockey and we all just have to accept it.

i think that was one of the biggest surprises in the hockey trade world.marty biron would have been too if i hadn't heard them say the day before because of all the injuries they might trade him.i had heard edmonton say a couple of days before the trade deadline that ryan smith would be staying there.i had heard the redwings were looking to sign him but he was staying with the oilers.i was really surprised to hear he went with the islanders of all teams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's true that it was stupid, but that's Bettman's NHL for you. It doesn't make sense for any reason other than the cap.
