If it's an acrylic or polyester sweater you can machine wash and dry it. However, if it is a wool or rayon sweater DON'T put it in the dryer or wash in hot water (unless you have a cousin who's a leprechaun you can give it to when it shrinks to half it's size.)

Unfortunately, because most synthetics are not very resilient, it is harder to restore the shape on a stretched out sweater. I just had to throw out 2 acrylic sweaters that got too stretched out to save. Natural fibers like wool or rayon are more resilient -- follow the steps below if that is what you have.

If it's wool or rayon, handwash it with dish washing liquid (the kind for sink washing, not for an electric dishwasher) or Woolite. Rinse it very well. Then lay it out on a beach towel, pushing it into the shape you want and let it dry. Sometimes you can reshape a little by carefully steam ironing a sweater.

I have before - just wash it in hot water and pop it in the dryer!
