so i had a natural birth with my 1st son, a c-section with my 2nd. i really want to use a mid wife when I have another baby. Is this possible? Do I have to go with a doctor?

I would recommend you go to a doctor to discuss the safety of using a midwife instead because there is a greater risk of uterine rupture from having a vaginal birth after you have had a C-sec, especially if the c-sec scar is somewhat new and could tear during the labor process. Your doctor can give you more info, and even if he recommends a hospital birth in your case, you could still have it be midwife-assisted. There are midwives who will assist your birthing experience in your own home or in a hospital.

A lot depends on your pregnancy history. Most hospitals allow you to use a midwife, or any birthing coach, of your choice in addition to your doctor. If you want to use a midwife alone, and have the facilities in your area to do so (or to have a home birth) a Midwife would be able to answer your questions. VBAC's are possible, depending on the type of incision you had with your c-section. However, if you have any issues during pregnancy that raise your risk level to anything other low-risk, the midwife will most likely refer you to a OB/GYN.

After my wife had a c-section, they told her that she could try natural birth for the 2nd, but a Dr had to be close in case there were any complications. A midwife would have delivered the baby, if no complications arose, but like I said, a Dr. had to be close in case of an emergency c-section was needed.

if it has been less than 2 years since you had your c section you are at an increased risk of having to have a repeat c section because of possible complications. mid wifes are wonderful i used one with my first daughter and she was like a member of my family. they will go by any birth plan or ideas you may have a little more than a regular doctor and less likely to do episiotimies which are often not needed.

I would consult w/ your doctor just to be on the safe side. See if they have any midwives that they can refer you to or are associated w/. At least that way you'd feel a little more at ease knowing that in case of an emergency, they would fall back on calling your normal OB/GYN. Interview midwives in your area and see which ones are affiliated w/ hospitals that you're most comfortable w/.
