Ernest Hemingway was a very courageous, outdoor type of man and he wrote novels in which the heroes were plucky, enterprising, good at their career-- in short, very much like himself. He also wrote biographical works of his adventures in various countries. And he certainly travelled! He wrote about the Spanish Civil War in "For Whom the Bell Tolls". "A Movable Feast" is about his adventures in Paris. "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Green Hills of Africa" describe his big game hunting exploits in Tanzania. "Death in the Afternoon" takes the reader to the world of bull fighting. "The Old Man and the Sea" transports one to the grim struggles of a fisherman. Rather than burden you with a further list of his works I'll refer you to this link. http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1954/hemingway-bio.html
Every tourist to Havana feels the urge to visit the bar frequented by Hemingway and to drink a mojito in his memory. He is timeless!
Are his books any good? The man won a Nobel Prize for literature! That's how good they are!

American Literature, he was a novelist, short story writer and journalist. There's a short bio written up in Wiki. Most people tend to either like him or dislike without a lot of middle ground. He won the Pulitzer in '53 for Old Man and the Sea, also wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls.
I've always liked him, but then again I'm an old man living by the sea =P

Hemingway wrote world's best short stories. Really short - half a page type of stories. He is the pioneer there. He wrote novels too. They are thrilling for people who love literature, words and thinking. 'Old man and the sea' is one everybody can read. It is short and plain.
Hemingway fought in world war I and those experiences are the base for all his writtings. I've noticed onething common in his writings - 'death'.
