We created an empire because we got rid of the burden of the Americas. It was three thousand miles away from Britain, they weren't paying any taxes, and we were not gaining any benefit from them. If you think about it, they, were actually us. It was really a revolution. The revolutionaries were supported by the dastardly French, it was mainly guerrilla warfare, not suited to uniformed armies used to fighting on an open battlefield, and support was three thousand miles away. It was inevitable, anyway. Our government of the time, wanted to let it go before the war started. King George, however, didn't want to let go, and involved us in a war.
I am not sure what you mean by, "look what's happened now". It was nearly two hundred and thirty years ago.

No. America's doing better without us ruling them.
They've kept the basic freedoms our repressive government took away, including the right to bear arms and defend yourself.
You really want America to be like Britain now? Bad quality of life, a fascist nanny state, an unemployed working class and kids running wild.
