It can be $100, $1,000, $10,000 or $30,000. Whatever you plant, you'll get three bags of bells back but only one time. I've never had a money tree give bags twice. Be careful where you plant them, though. If you're too close to the shore or those patches of weeds, they may not grow or they may grow but not produce.
I also try to carry a sign with me at all times to put next to the tree to remind me where I planted it. Otherwise you might forget where they are.
If you plant a shovel, a gold tree will grow and give you a golden shovel. You won't see it but when you shake it, one will fall out. If you take the golden shovel and just did randomly, oftentimes you'll did up bags of $100.
