I have an '86 El Camino with a 350 v8(non-vortec)...and i also have a '98 chevy 1500 with the vortec 350. The vortec 350 doesn't have that giant vacuum sound like the '86 350 does. Do the more restrictive heads cause that sound?

Your '86 has several vacuum activated items. Vacuum advance on the distributor, vacuum secondaries if it's carbureted, etc. Most everything on the '98 is computer controlled and electronically activated. Newer vehicles also use air silencers to dampen the "vacuum" sound of the air intake.

that vortec had perhaps 220hp in 98 and the 86 had only maybe 190hp. that in itself is going to sound different. then we have different sizes exhaust and fuel intake systems.

Is your '86 carburetted? I think that's probably your difference...
